Chris Snape - New York Marathon 2013
Story
Good health is something we all strive for at least in our minds. This year I decided to be proactive about this goal and participate in the New York marathon on behalf of the Heart Foundation. After a particularly indulgent summer and the previous ten years, it seems necessary to commit myself to something tangible so I will have the inspiration I need to build my fitness so I don't collapse on the track.
I’ve been doing the usual; and looking at all the websites for how to train for a marathon; purchased new shoes; and went to see the doctor to ensure I’ve got the wear with all, and all seems to be okay. I’ve even lost 10kgs and I’m sure that’s just the start. The exercise program has started with assistance from a great friend who is also running the marathon this year.
So I’ve covered the background and all appears to be good. The mental state is prepared also thanks to Google. Apparently marathon runners love to read signs according to about.com. This helps to help break the monotony. The following are some of the signs that I can expect on my jog around:
"In our minds, you're all Kenyans."
"Your legs will forgive you...eventually."
"Don't stop -- people are watching."
"Worst Parade Ever"
"Chafe now...brag forever."
"That's not sweat, it's your fat cells crying."
"You've got stamina! Call me!"
"I'm sure it seemed like a good idea 12 months ago."
"Run like you stole something."
"Toenails are for sissies."
"Where are you all going?"
"Hurry up...beer misses you!"
"You're not slow. You're just enjoying the course."
Personal reasons and humour aside, I think the Heart Foundation is a great charity and I would like to encourage my family, friends and colleagues to contribute whatever they can to not only support this organisation, but keep me accountable for my promises!
This opportunity also has ties to my professional life; I currently work at Queensland Health, where I lead a team in delivering technology to a new hospital. While working on delivering this health care facility, the importance of health has become especially pertinent, and this is yet another sign that it is time for me to take action.
So follow me through this journey and donate to a great cause and just remember I’m trying to raise $250 per kilometre while reading all those signs and feeling motivated by all the great support.
